Retention of Danish citizenship
You can apply for retention of Danish citizenship it you were born as a Danish citizen abroad, have another citizenship than Danish and have never lived in Denmark. You cannot apply for retention of Danish citizenship until you are 21 years old. The application must, however, be submitted the day before you turn 22 years old at the latest.
The conditions for retaining your Danish citizenship are always based on a concrete assessment. As a rule, you automatically fulfil the conditions for retaining your Danish citizenship if you either:
- have been registered as residing in Denmark for at least three consecutive months
- have resided in Denmark for a total of 12 months from birth until you are 22 years old.
This does not apply, however, to people who only have Danish citizenship or were born in Denmark.
Danes Worldwide recommend that, for the sake of good order, that Danish children born abroad apply for retention of Danish citizenship.
The contact form is based on the questions that are included in the application for retention of Danish citizenship. Some of the questions may be complicated. Therefore, we recommend that you read the conditions for retention of Danish citizenship before you complete the contact form.
Proof of Danish citizenship
You can apply for proof of Danish citizenship if you were born as a Danish citizen or have acquired it later, but do not have any proof of it, for example, if you were born abroad.
Different elements are decisive for whether you automatically became a Danish citizen, for example, if your parents were married, etc. Proof of Danish citizenship must be used if you, for example, apply for a Danish passport at a Danish embassy or consulate.
If you have previously obtained proof of Danish citizenship and have lost it, you can apply for obtaining confirmation of proof, but not a new proof document.
