Assignments
Danish for Beginners, ages 6-12 is structured around an animated world featuring the Petersen family. New material is presented in a brief animated introduction, and then a variety of related assignments are given:
- Listening assignments – the child is asked to recognize Danish words.
- Reading assignments – the child is asked to demonstrate in various ways that he or she is able to read/recognize written words
- Speaking assignments – the child is asked to repeat sentences to practice correct pronunciation or to speak with a parent
- Writing assignments – the child is asked to fill in words missing from a sentence
The guiding principles for the development of topics and assignments in Danish for Beginners, ages 6-12 are continual motivation for the student, meaningful communication events, and specific learning objectives.
Levels, topics, and time requirement
Danish for Beginners, ages 6-12 contains:
- 4 levels
- 6-8 topics in each level
- Each topic includes approximately 6 hours of instruction
Danish for Beginners, ages 6-12 is structured as a four-level progression with associated learning objectives. Each level is subdivided into topics to allow the child to move forward in small steps and to cover a number of everyday situations. Every topic is reflected in a ‘part 2’ so as to repeat vocabulary and grammar and give the child the best possible opportunity to learn the material.
At the end of each topical episode, there is an assessment to ensure the learning objectives were achieved and to enable the child to check that he or she did learn the material.
The time requirement varies from child to child. On average, children aged 6-10 spend approcimately 6 hours on each topic for a total of 36-48 hours of instruction. We recommend that your child go through 1-2 topics per week so that learning progresses smoothly.
Here’s what your child will learn at Level 1:

- Introductions of himselfor herself and others in the family
- The numbers 0-100, names of days of the week and the months, and date expressions
- Expressions for the time of day
- Words deswcribing day to day activities (e.g. eat, sleep) and food
- Words for rooms and furniture in a home
- Expressions for leisure time activities
Here’s what your child will learn at Level 2:

- Words for family relations and events (birthday, cousin, uncle, etc)
- Words related to travel and transportation
- Words for colors and words related to nature
- Words relating to camping and staying overnight at a friend’s house
- Words for animals
Here’s what your child will learn at Level 3:

- The 120 most common words in Danish
- Words for parts of the body, illness, physicians, and dentists
- Words related to christmas, baking, and gifts
- Words describing theater and school plays
- Terms for winter weather and visits with family
Here’s what your child will learn at Level 4:

- Words for the seasons and a number of Danish traditions
- Words for Shrovetide traditions and costumes (analogous to trick-or-treating at Halloween)
- Words describing play and toys
- Terms for friends
Certificate of Completion
Upon completion of a course, students may request a certificate.
