Play and Learn Danish

A fun way to learn Danish for the youngest children

A young child is sitting at a table using a laptop. The computer screen displays colorful graphics with cartoon characters. A mug with the letter C is beside the laptop. The background is a softly lit room with toys and a couch.

Play and Learn Danish offers dynamic activities for children aged approximately 4–6 years.

With lots of helpful advice and more than 300 ideas for activities, learning Danish becomes both enjoyable and fun for children and adults alike – through play, cooking or brushing teeth.

Play and Learn Danish is supported by the Ministry of Education and specially developed by Danes Worldwide teachers with many years of experience in teaching Danish to Danish children living abroad.

Did you know?

Language stimulation for preschool children is important. Language gives identity and a sense of belonging to a community. The Danish language helps your child learn to understand themselves and their surroundings.
The earlier a child receives language stimulation, the easier it will be for them to learn to read and write Danish later on.

What does Play and Learn Danish contain?

With Play and Learn Danish, you build a bridge from your child’s first language to Danish, with a special focus on vocabulary within nine different themes, ranging from the body and clothing to family and friends.

There are a wealth of different activities for each theme. You will be introduced to new Danish children’s programmes and films from television. From the parents’ own childhood, there are good old songs, singing games and silly rhymes and verses, as well as access to brand new online games, print activities and easy Danish books.

The material is structured and divided into topics, and there is a parent guide full of professional advice on how to approach the activities. When your child needs to learn how to pronounce the letters of the alphabet, for example, there is a video for each letter. In the video, the teacher shows how to position the mouth so that the letter sounds completely correct.

“My daughter Marguerite and I used Leg og lær dansk before she started studying at Skoledansk. We had a lot of fun, and some of the tasks suddenly involved the whole family when we had to sing one song or another or solve other of the many varied tasks using gestures.

Every day, we took a small bite out of the course. Afterwards, we practised the new things she had learned, even when we were eating dinner, driving the car, etc. It laid a good foundation for her education and gave me an opportunity to evaluate her knowledge. Highly recommended”
