Web accessibility

At Danes Worldwide, we want all users – regardless of abilities and circumstances – to be able to use our website. We work according to the guidelines in WCAG 2.1 level AA, which is the current international standard for web accessibility.

We are aware that some elements do not yet meet all requirements. Below, we describe the status of our work on digital accessibility.

Our goal for digital accessibility

We strive to ensure that our website can be used by everyone, including people with visual, hearing, motor, or cognitive impairments. Our goal is for our entire digital universe – both danes.dk and associated platforms – to eventually comply with WCAG 2.1 level AA.

This is what we do today

We have already implemented several initiatives to improve accessibility on the website, including:

  • Use of semantic HTML tags and clear headings
  • Focus on color contrast and readability
  • Text alternatives for images (alt text) are provided for all images (except for speaker photos on our event pages)
  • Simple navigation and mobile-optimized design
  • All link texts clearly explain the content they lead to
  • On all pages and posts, background colors have been adjusted to be either white or light gray only, in order to optimize contrast with the white or gray text color.

In addition, we continuously test the site using both automated tools and manual reviews to identify and fix accessibility issues.

Limitations

We have identified the following issues with our site, which we have decided not to fix, as doing so would require disproportionate resources in terms of time and cost:

  • We have used characters in our main menu (’|’ and ’-’) that do not contain a link. These characters are used visually to separate different types of menu items.
  • The contrast between white text and the header image on all pages is too low.
  • We use the mosaic module in the Gutenberg editor to present content in grid form on the pages. The module is used on almost all pages and is primarily used to display images with introductory text and a link. The module includes an H2 heading by default, which is not always filled in. This is because the heading is often not relevant in the context where the mosaic is used.
  • On our pages and posts, we sometimes link to external websites where the link opens in a new tab (primarily links to external pages or PDFs). Users are not informed of this – neither via an ARIA label nor in the link text itself.
  • Our FAQ module lacks a field label on the plus/minus icons that expand the answers to individual questions, and when multiple Q&As are listed in the same module, new IDs are not generated.
  • We have used our table module to display prices for our different products and services. The tables are not responsive, lack headers, and the contrast color in the table headers is insufficient.
  • On all our posts, the static texts “Written by:” and “Published on:” do not have sufficient contrast.
  • On certain pages, it is possible to download a PDF. We are aware that the PDF format does not meet accessibility requirements but consider the content of the PDFs non-essential for using our website.

Missing “Skip to content” feature in the webshop

The webshop at https://enmembers.danes.dk does not include a “skip to content” feature, which is otherwise recommended to make it easier for users navigating with a keyboard or screen reader to quickly access the main content. The webshop is based on a third-party platform, and we are not able to implement this functionality directly.

Use of third-party platforms

We use a few third-party products – for example, Zendesk, which we use for our knowledge base. As these solutions are not developed by Danes Worldwide, we have not assumed responsibility for their web accessibility. This means that certain functions outside our own pages may present accessibility challenges that we are not able to address directly.

However, we strive to choose providers who work with accessibility, and we welcome input from users who encounter specific barriers.

Plans for a new website

We plan to launch a new website in Q2 2026, where all known accessibility issues will be addressed. Our goal is for the new site to comply with WCAG 2.2 level AA.
