Danish Language and Culture

The Danish Language and Culture programme is for those who want to improve their ability to speak, read and write Danish while learning about Danish culture. You will be placed in a class that suits your level so that you get the most out of the programme.

Intensive instruction

The program offers approximately 75 lessons in language and culture, and expectations as to students’ work are high in that Summer School is not a ”camp” or a vacation. The teachers have professional credentials, and the style of instruction reflects the practice in the Danish school system featuring group work and collaborative work. Debate and discussion are key, and students practice making the case for their own opinions.

The summerschool is amazing, I really want to come back next year!

We’ll get the student into the appropriate class

To ensure that all students are placed at the right level, the Danish teachers carry out a language screening of all students, and students are then categorised into as many as ten different levels according to the European Framework of Reference.
We do this in order to tailor the teaching to the individual student.

The three levels of Danish language classes

Danish for Beginners

This level is designed for students with limited or no knowledge of Danish.

Intermediate Danish

This class is designed for students who know enough Danish to have a simple day-to-day conversation but do not speak it at an age appropriate level.

School Level Danish (4th-9th grade)

This level is designed for students who study Danish during the school year and are taught writing skills.
Which level of danish is right for my child?

All students are placed in a class that matches their level.

Students whose level we don’t already know will be sent an online test to complete so we can place them on the right level. However, we do know the level of some of our students from before, so we don’t test them.

At the Summer School, students where we have doubts about their level are tested orally on the first day. By testing students, we ensure that they get the most and best out of the programme.

Is Danish the only subject taught at Summer School?

The program includes, in addition to lessons in Danish language and literature, instruction in the culture related subjects taught in the national school system.

Thus, history, religion, social studies, and natural sciences are part of the overall content.

That way, students gain insight into the society of Denmark and the cultural environment of Danish children and teens.

During the 17 days of Summer School, we have the students visit, say, a museum, a factory, a TV station, or an art exhibit. Sleeping under the stars in the woods is our way of helping students get to know the natural environment in Denmark.

Documentation for academic content at the Summer School

Some of our students live in a country/area where the summer holidays are at a different time than in Denmark. Some may find it challenging to get their child released from local schooling to attend the Summer School.

We offer to provide a detailed plan in English describing the scope of the programme (approximately 75 hours) and content in Danish language and culture. This can be used as official documentation for relevant schools abroad.

Please contact us if you would like to receive the plan and we will send it to you.

Teachers at The Danish Summer School

All Summer School teachers have professional credentials in teaching Danish. They know how to build interesting and varied lessons and how to support each student individually with respect to learning and achievement.
