Retention of Danish citizenship

You can apply for retention of Danish citizenship it you were born as a Danish citizen abroad and have another citizenship than Danish. You cannot apply for retention of Danish citizenship until you are 21 years old. The requirements for retention must be fulfilled by the time you turn 22 years old at the latest.

The conditions for retaining your Danish citizenship are always based on a concrete assessment. As a rule, you automatically fulfil the conditions for retaining your Danish citizenship if you either:

  • have been registered as residing in Denmark for at least three consecutive months
  • have resided in Denmark for a total of 12 months from birth until you are 22 years old.

This does not apply, however, to people who only have Danish citizenship or were born in Denmark.
